Be aware of bogus callers

Posted: 01 July 2024

Last week we received several reports of bogus callers contacting local Cambridge residents.

In this particular instance, the bogus callers claimed to be from Cambridge Water, asking customers for bank details to process refunds.

For clarity to customers, your latest bill will indicate if you are due a refund, and we won’t ask for your full card details to process a refund.

If someone calls you claiming to be from Cambridge Water and asks you for these details, this is a scam. Please hang up and, if you can, report it to Action Fraud and to us on 01223 706050.

Bogus callers often pretend to be from utility companies and use certain terminology to trick people into believing they are legitimate.

We’re committed to working with all our customers, to take steps to ensure that everyone can feel safe within their own home.

For customers who need extra support we have a range of free services we offer through our Priority Services Register. This includes a free-of-charge password protection scheme where customers can register a unique password with us which our representatives will always quote to help ensure customers know that their visitors are genuine.

To further protect customers from the threat of bogus callers, we ensure all our employees carry photo identity cards which has a unique number.

Customers can contact us, quote the ID number and we will check the name and reason for the visit. In most cases, our employees will also wear a branded uniform and will typically be in a branded vehicle.

Regardless of whether a customer has signed up for the password protection scheme, we recommend the three-step approach when customers receive unexpected or unknown visitors:
