There are a number of approved contractor schemes in operation in the UK. We support the Water Industry Approved Scheme (WIAPS).

There are two main types of approved contractor:

• Those carrying out work on laying and repairing external water services
• Those carrying out general plumbing and heating work

The easiest way to find an approved contractor is to log on to the WRAS website and type in your postcode to find your nearest Water Industry Approved Plumber Scheme (WIAPS) installer.

WRAS

WRAS is also a useful source of information. The purpose of WRAS is to contribute to the protection of public health by preventing contamination of public water supplies and encouraging the efficient use of water by promoting and facilitating compliance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Scottish Water Byelaws.

Hydrants are located along various points on our mains network. Their primary purpose is to allow water to be drawn off by the emergency services.

However, if temporary access is needed to our mains network, we hire out standpipes specifically for this purpose. Find out more.
